Ben’s Movie Adventures: Reviews, Rankings, and More

·

This is my thoughts and reviews about movies I see. I’m also going to probably talk about books, TV shows, and my twins. Mostly movies though.

My name is Ben and I got into movies at a really weird time. In 2018, the Moviepass subscription plan dropped to a comically low price, and I didn’t have a job at that time, so I watched some of the most forgettable and weird movies that year. Who can forget such classics as Rampage, Isle of Dogs, Tomb Raider (not Angelina Jolie), Venom, Uncle Drew (I might have actually paid for this movie) and Chappaquiddick (one of the worst theater movie theater experiences I have ever had). While these movies ranged from weird to bad, I was still having fun! These were probably not movies I would normally see at theaters. I mostly watched Superhero movies to that point.

In 2019 I decided to start keeping track of the movies I saw that came out that year. I came up with (what I thought at the time) a cool 30 point system to rank the movies, and give some context each year. Looking back I was an idiot. Not about the 30 point system, I still use it, flaws and all. I was an idiot about my rankings. I gave Triple Frontier a 14/30 and Detective Pikachu a 12/30. I know usually reserve scores under 15 for movies I have real problems with. These are some of my most rewatched movies from that year and I really like them! I gave Avengers: Endgame an 18/30. I was a real dumb-dumb.

Then 2020 happened. I was still dumb and there wasn’t a lot of movies to go see (I gave Parasite a 19/30). This was the year I decided to include streaming movies as a part of my rankings. I only saw 19 new movies that year. The list is bleak.

In 2021 movies started to open up and I was starved for content. I eagerly went to go see Boogie and G.I. Joe Snake Eyes in theaters. They were terrible, but the friends I went with had a good laugh. I saw a few movies that I definitely would not have seen a few year ago that realized what a special experience watching a great movie could be. Pig is one that comes to mind. I was tearing up from an understated Nicholas Cage performance, and I wasn’t sure why.

As time has gone on I have gotten to more movies, and my tastes have changed (hopefully grown) and I still love going to the movie theater. I am writing this blog as further growth of my movie watching and reflection habits. If you want to engage with me after reading this, that works too.
